The Hempfest Hypocrisy

Headline – Mayor: Hempfest will be held at same park despite complaint

It’s very interesting that the Mayor will allow a festival that promotes open marijuana smoking, as stated on the Hempfest website, “So bring your own and be as civilly disobedient as you wish! Circle up! Make new friends! Hempfest is certainly a smoke friendly zone and you’ll love tokin’ with 100,000 of your new Hempfest friends.” in a public park even though I-502 specifically forbids the public consumption or display of marijuana.

Then there is the State of Washington RCW 70.160.030 and the King County Board of Health Regulation #10-03: which states, “Civil penalties for violations of this chapter at any large event venue shall be assessed at a rate of one hundred dollars for everyone thousand persons lawfully permitted to assemble at the venue, for each violation. Each day upon which a violation occurs or is permitted to continue constitutes a separate violation.”

Why isn’t he enforcing the laws he swore to uphold. It’s because of our addiction to Hypocrisy. In the beginning of the WSLCB public hearings on I-502, everybody was saying, ‘We have to get this right.’ but the love of hypocrisy has allowed the Mayor to side step the law and pander to the 300,000 voters that attend Hempfest. He could have been an anti-hypocrite and fight to change the laws he refuses to enforce and allow Hempfest to operate, honestly, as it should, but as with most politicians, he succumbed to his addiction.

I love Hempfest and the venue it uses but if we truly want to get it right, let’s fight the hypocrisy and feel good about ourselves. Remember Carl Jung said, “A little less hypocrisy and a little more self-knowledge can only have good results in respect for our neighbor; for we are all too prone to transfer to our fellows the injustice and violence we inflict upon our own natures.”
